Tom Tlalim is a composer, performer and interdisciplinary artist. He was invited to participate in the Zuidas Free Spaces AIR 2010 by partner institute Muziekcentrum Nederland / NFPK+. Tom Tlalim was also supported for this project by a research subsidy from Stroom, The Hague. In addition, he recently received a start stipend from the Netherlands Foundation for Visual Arts, Design and Architecture (Fonds BKVB).

Tom Tlalim (Jerusalem,1975) started his career as a guitarist/songwriter in bands around Tel Aviv and Jerusalem’s underground scene. He soon developed a unique style, pouring jazz and contemporary influences into his arrangements while maintaining a punk attitude. Alongside performing, he went on to develop a career in composing music for film. Tlalim’s interest in unconventional musical structures led him to study composition in the Netherlands.

After completing MA degrees in composition and sonology at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague, Tlalim went on to present his work at acclaimed international venues and festivals such as the Venice Architecture Biennial, Transmediale, V2_DEAF, TodaysArt, the Gaudeamus Live Electronics Festival and the 90-Year Jubilee of the Bauhaus in Weimar. In 2010, Tlalim will start work on a practice-led PhD at Goldsmiths in London.

Tlalim’s underground beginnings are reflected in his approach to contemporary music as he investigates noise, feedback, overdrive, spatial paradigms, control structures, the human voice and poetry. His work is normally a product of extensive research into a text or theme, which later is used to generate coded meaning.

Results of the Residency: ‘Walking Through Walls’

On his wanderings through the district during his residency, in which he let himself be led by chance sounds, Tom Tlalim discovered that it is impossible to endlessly roam about in the Zuidas. ‘Everything is straight, the urban design offers no twists or turns or surprises. To an individual, that comes across as fairly aggressive.’
Tom Tlalim wants to walk through walls. He uses this subtle dream as a connecting point between his personal excursions, military tactics and financial strategies. In the work ‘Walking Through Walls’, a combination of video, text and sound, he combines his experiences and views in an extraordinary way in the exhibition in the Kapel.
