SPECTACULAR:

It might be the smallest building in the Zuidas, but it is of inestimable importance, said Robert Dijckmeester, business director of Zuidas Amsterdam, when ProRail’s Amsterdam
RAI substation on the Barbara Strozzilaan was inaugurated last October 9th. The substation was designed by artist Krijn de Koning on commission from ProRail in collaboration with Liander, Zuidas Amsterdam and Virtual Museum Zuidas, and is built
on top of Liander’s 10 KV electricity station. The colourful skin of this electricity station was also designed by Krijn de Koning. Besides power for the trains, the substation provides electricity for thousands of households in Amsterdam. The ProRail building and the 10 KV building are part of a total design for the eastern entrance area to the Zuidas, which Krijn de Koning has been working on at the invitation of the Virtual Museum Zuidas since 2003.
In this plan, existing buildings will be restored and renovated to feature prominently upon a large black square. When the time comes, a folly on this square that is the final stop for tramline 4 will mark the entrance area.
