Krijn de Koning designs ProRail substation
For a year or two now, a brightly coloured 10KV station has enlivened the Nuon terrain in the Vivaldi sector of the Zuidas, to the south of the RAI train station. The characteristic, sculptural exterior of this Nuon transformer house was designed by the artist Krijn de Koning. In the spring of 2009, the 10KV station will be joined by a substation to provide electricity for ProRail. This substation is also designed by Krijn de Koning. It was conceived as an extension of the 10KV station and will for the most part stand on tall columns above the existing building. This is the first time that De Koning has made an artwork that simultaneously functions as a building. Not only is the substation an exciting new landmark in the landscape of the Zuidas, it is also an important step in the oeuvre of the artist. In the coming year, other aspects of the De Koning plan will gradually become visible, including a whimsical structure for the GVB, a ‘folly’. De Koning has conceived the entire Nuon area, the eastern entrance to the Zuidas, as one big continuous square with bicycle paths, on which the buildings stand like sculptures on a pedestal.
