zuidas architecture guide On commission from Zuidas Amsterdam, an architecture guide plus map is coming out this fall, featuring some 40 buildings of the Zuidas – old and new – ranging from the Liberal Jewish Community’s new synagogue/community centre on the Zuidelijke Wandelweg (design: SeARCH) to the ING House (design: Meyer en Van Schooten Architecten). Text by Eringa, photographs by Doriann Kransberg. The book is in the first instance a promotional gift. If there is sufficient interest, a retail edition will be considered.

farewell to ‘landfall’ The curtain has finally fallen on the Landfall billboards by the artist duo Hiryczuk/Van Oevelen that were distributed throughout the Zuidas over the past five years. The popular photographs, which compare the man-made Zuidas to the
similarly sized but naturally-created island of Surtsey, were from the very start only meant to temporarily enliven public space. Inspired by Landfall, a book is being
published on the relation between nature, urban development, art and public space. Commissioner: Virtual Museum Zuidas. Publisher: Jap Sam Books. This book will be the first in a series.

krijn de koning The brightly coloured Amsterdam RAI Substation and the 10 KV Liander building – designed by artist Krijn de Koning – are already in use. Next year, the rest of Krijn de Koning’s total design for the eastern entrance area to the Zuidas will be carried out. The area will be given a new paving that will provide a sense of rest, space and unity. From then on, the square will function as a plinth for the existing buildings. A folly by Krijn de Koning will also keep the buildings company. The entrance area is scheduled to be completed at the end of 2012.

golden a.a.p. Not one but three Zuidas buildings were nominated for 2010 Golden Amsterdam Architecture Prize (A.A.P.) organized by the Amsterdam architecture centre ARCAM: RAI Elicium by Benthem Crouwel Architekten, The Rock by Erick van Egeraat (which houses De Brauw Blackstone Westbroek) and the UN Studio tower (winner: 4 towers Osdorp by Wiel Arets). In 2011, the new synagogue, by SeARCH, will undoubtedly be contending for the A.A.P.

photography in the zuidas De Brauw Blackstone Westbroek has embarked on a long-term collaboration with FOAM, the photography museum. FOAM will be showing photographs of current exhibitions on an LCD screen in The Rock. Earlier this year, to kick off the collaboration, the outdoor exhibition ‘Paris Street View’ by the internationally renowned photographer Michael Wolf was shown in the Zuidas, on which the Virtual Museum Zuidas also collaborated.
