Invited by Virtual Museum Zuidas.
Plan: to leave a slew of ideas behind as an ‘idea bank’ for the former Sint Nicolaas Monastery (residencies).
‘I have worked as an artist 24 hours a day to produce as many ideas for the Zuidas as possible, from useful to critical and from urban planning to the banal. In the banal proposal, a section of the Zuidas has a fake façade inspired by the red light district, so that tourists will come there to make photographs in the deserted night time hours. My most realistic proposal is called “Jennifer”. It’s a web of laser beams that lights up the Zuidas, giving it an adventurous look that can be seen as far away as the centre of Amsterdam.’
Invited to produce ideas for 5 months.
Contract signed to produce ideas for 5 months.
Arrival in Amsterdam: May 12, 2008.
First day of work: 25 ideas for projects.
Logical conclusion: 3,750 ideas by October 12.
July 23: Countdown, preparing catalogue material, etc.
Final actual production time: 56 days.
Logical conclusion: 1,400 ideas.
Actual number of ideas: 135
Conclusion: Is the number of ideas inversely proportional to the distance between the beginning and the end of a project to the power of 2? Geometry.
Geography: From Bilbao to Beatrixpark, from Beatrixpark to the centre of the Zuidas.
56 days without moving from the Zuidas. Trips to the city centre: 14 days to find food; 6 days: various activities. Trips out of the country: 2 days .
The Zuidas project as a style-related experiment. Style as a result of an obligation executed in a fixed period of time.
Idea 1: Write down at least one new idea per day. Will I be enlightened? Enlightenment is inversely proportional to the distance separating the light source and the lit object to the power
of 2.
Idea 20: Buy ideas, pay for them and then develop them.
Idea 21: Sell ideas to others.
Idea 113: Create a bank of ideas in the bank district.
Idea 41: Write down the brainstorming each day.
Idea 27: Turn each idea into an image. Develop each image in relation to a possible project.
Results by July 27: 213 images.
Images produced daily for 56 days: 3.8.
Idea 111: Sort ideas into blocks or groups: brilliant ideas, bad ideas, impossible ideas, stolen ideas, etc. Especially divide them into two general groups: critical or collaborationist.
Idea 27: Turn each proposal into an image.
Idea 117: Create a fake unisex red light district, joining the wax museum tradition with the prostitution area in Amsterdam. Tourism.
Idea 121: 12 webcams are presently broadcasting images from different locations on the Zuidas 24 hours a day.
Find the real sites, the 12 locations. Switch on, at a given time in the night, 12 different light sources, one in each of the locations. In order to virtually map out, a huge area. It would be just a line of light from each building to the other 11 buildings, which would define the area from ING to the KPN tower.
Idea 131: The full project will not be finished until each idea has a name. Better if it’s a proper name, e.g., Jennifer.
