FRIED CRICKETS:

At the invitation of the Virtual Museum Zuidas, the Stedelijk Museum’s Construction Cabin stood on the Gustav Mahlerplein in September 2009. Taking place in and around the Construction Cabin from 11 September through 11 October was the third edition of ‘Visibly Absent’, an event organized by the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam in collaboration with the Gerrit Rietveld Academy and the Sandberg Institute. For ‘Visibly Absent’, artists reacted to icons in the Stedelijk’s collection and made them visible in public space in their own manner. Matthias Schreiber made a blowup version of Jeff Koons’ criticism of the consumer society, ‘Ushering in Banality’ (1988), on the Gustav Mahlerplein. Using documents related to the financial crisis, Henrik van Leeuwen rebuilt the igloo ‘From Honey to Ashes’ (1984) by Mario Merz in the WTC building. Femke Herregraven was inspired by Albert Speer’s photograph of the Reichstag, which was the model for Anselm Kiefer’s painting, ‘Innenraum’ (1981). Following the lead of Daniel Spoerri’s dinner, ‘Table du restaurant de la City Galerie’ (1965), Sjim Hendrix cooked an exquisite meal in New Amsterdam for a company of gallery owners, museum people and Zuidas entrepreneurs, featuring fried crickets, weeds and bulls’ testicles.
